From the Email Bag: A Note About Modified Tag Protectors
USA
January 30, 2008
A reader from the USA shares the following thoughts about fitting a modified hang tag protector on the tags of your Beanie Babies 2.0 collectibles. He writes:
You may want to let your readers know that although a modified swing tag protector will fit the way the swing tag attaches to BB2.0s, it WILL NOT fit the separate heart-shaped tag which has the Beanie's name. This separate tag is true heart shape with no straight sides. Tag protectors are made to fit a tag with one side cut straight. If the separate tag is placed inside a tag protector (modified or not) and an attempt is made to close the protector, the separate tag will be bent or creased.
Bean Watcher comment: Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. Your point is well taken and should be heeded.

One Way to Protect Your Beanie Baby 2.0 Tags
California, USA
January 28, 2007
A reader from California shares how she is temporarily protecting her Beanie Baby 2.0 (BB 2.0) hang tags. She writes (slightly edited):
The new tags are hung with the red plastic fastener on the right hand side of the heart with the hole about half way down.
I resolved the problem... by cutting out a small rectangle (the size of the top of the red hanger) using an xacto knife. Cut from the inside of the protector so there will not be any rough edges on the inside to scratch the hang tag. (Please note if one has never used an xacto knife, always cut away from your hand) Cut the rectangle all the way to the very edge of the plastic tag protector. Then, close the protector and using a pair of scissors, cut away the flange of the protector for the entire upper right hand quarter of the protector.
All that will remain on the upper quarter of the protector will be the vertical side which is about an eighth of an inch wide. This narrow remaining piece will allow some flexibility so the "string" of the red fastener will not prevent the protector from closing tight. Fit the top of the fastener through the little rectangle and then fit the tags into the front portion of the protector and close it.

Authenticity of I Love Guam is Confirmed
Illinois, USA
January 27, 2007
Becky from Illinois, owner of True Blue Beans, has confirmed the authenticity of the unannounced beanie, (I Love) Guam. Becky writes:
I have 4 of the I Love Guam Beanies in hand and they are all 100% authentic. Customer Support at Ty Inc has confirmed their existence. The style number is 47073 and they were released approximately 6 months ago.
Bean Watcher comments: (1) So here's another beanie that has found its way to the market place, but has not been officially announced. Ty works in mysterious ways...! (2) I am trying to determine if this bear is exclusive to Guam, or if it might be found elsewhere. If I find out, I will certainly share the update with you.

From the Email Bag: Comparison of Beanie Sizes
South Pacific
January 27, 2008
A reader from the South Pacific shares a picture that compares the size of an original Beanie Baby with a Beanie Baby 2.0 style.
The original is the Billingham the March 2006 Beanie Baby of the Month and the BB 2.0 style, Quackly the duck.
The picture shows that, at least when comparing these two beanies, Billingham is noticeably smaller than Quackly. To see the picture, click here.
Bean Watcher comments: (1) Thank you for sharing your picture with us! (2) I had written to Marilyn from Wisconsin earlier this month and asked her to send comparison pictures of original beanie styles and BB 2.0 styles. I have received her pictures and will post them in tomorrow's column.
I Love Guam?
Texas, USA
January 26, 2007
Matt from the USA shares news of an interesting eBay (US) auction with us.
The auction (item number 350019124771) features what is being said to be an original I Love Guam Beanie Baby by Ty. The fabric used is similar to that used for I Love Hawaii.
The beanie is said to have a 15th generation hang tag and a 13th generation tush tag. The beanie can arguably be said to look authentic. Pictures of the beanie, hang tag, and tush tag are also posted. The seller states in her auction that the beanie can be authenticated at the buyer's expense.
To view the auction and accompanying pictures, click here.
Bean Watcher comment: Ty has never officially introduced an I Love Guam Beanie Baby, so the authenticity of this bear is questionable. It will be interesting to see if other I Love Guam beanies surface in the future.

Ty, Inc. Pulls Jammin' Jenna from Stores
Illinois, USA
January 24, 2007
WBBM 780, a Chicago-based news station, reports that Ty, Inc. has pulled the Ty Girlz doll, Jammin' Jenna, from local stores because of the lead contents in her painted shoes.
According to the report, Ty, Inc. agreed to stop distributing Jammin' Jenna doll in November 2007 and they changed the shoes on the new dolls from paint to cloth, assuming that the dolls with painted shoes would also be removed from stores. But last week, investigators found the dolls with painted shoes at a number of stores.
Ty, Inc. argued that the Jammin' Jenna dolls are safe. The dolls were tested in November and "tests confirmed that the toys were safe" and "met all federal safety requirements". The Illinois Attorney General said the dolls may meet federal safety requirements, but Illinois has higher safety standards when it comes to lead paint.
